Many years ago I was driven by money. It didn't matter how I got it, as long as it was honest. I was young and willing to work hard for it. So I started looking into different business and careers that would make me the most amount of money in the shortest period of time.

I took the standard route of going to college, getting a job in my area of study, and starting a career. However I was a weekend warrior. Looking for opportunities to turn a quick buck and start a business. That's when I began selling at flea markets, trade shows and conventions. Sometimes I'd drive hundreds of miles, listen to a stack of motivational tapes, and then drive back in time to get back to my day job.

At first, I enjoyed it. Having a little extra cash was great. But I wanted more than a little extra. I wanted to be rich! I found a few items that did well for me, saved up my cash then quit my day job. By age 30, I had a home, wife, couple of new cars, and a business of my own.

I began subcontracting out sales people to sell for me around the country. This eventually led to forming a multi-million dollar corporation with three offices. I traveled the country, drove expensive cars, and thought it would never end.

But guess what? I hated it. The long 100-hour weeks, dealing with customers, employee disputes, and all the paperwork began to wear on me. I started working less and less; getting sloppy, and letting things go unchecked. This led to more angry customers, employee disputes, and paperwork!

So to make a long story short, I lost everything. Divorced, in-debt over $300,000, and depressed. I had to move in with my family, take a job as a cashier, and re-think what I wanted to do in life. For 2 years I did almost nothing. I rarely had $10 in my wallet. A far cry from the days of driving $120,000 cars, $3000 bar tabs, sky-box seats at the races, and when walking around with $1000 in my pocket didn't seem like enough.

The real problem was not the business, the customers, or the employees. It was me. I didn't enjoy it. I got tired of dealing with people's problems. Sure, I was very articulate, polite, and a great negotiator. But it was all skill. Skills that I learned, practiced and became damn good at. But in the end, I only failed myself.

It wasn't until I went back to doing something I enjoy that I realized my mistakes. I started a new business where I'm having fun and I don't have to deal with customers or employees. There is very little paperwork and I have all the free time in the world. I probably work more than I realize, but when you enjoy your work, what difference does it make? I'm so happy now.

You've probably heard this story a hundred times on TV infomercials. I know a lot of you are still very young and full of energy, dreams and ambitions. But this is what led to my ultimate failure. Blindly following the dollar to get the material things, all the while ignoring my friends, family, and even my own health.

So why am I telling you all this? Let me ask you a question instead. Anyone ever tell you that you have a real knack for something? Sometimes other people are better at recognizing your talents than you are. Think about the things that you are best at, things you enjoy. Start writing them down, sharing them with you friends and family. Don't ignore your talents. Bring them out into the open. Value them as if your life depended on it, because it does.

I'm not saying to become a struggling artist or a starving musician. I'm saying discover your unique God-given talents, passions, and abilities, and then match them up with the needs and desires of the world. Once you do that, life will be so much easier. Money will come chasing after you, you will never "work" another day in your life, and all your dreams will come true!
